The Mellor Archaeological Trust
The 1998 excavation had been privately funded but in 1999, when it had become apparent how important the site was,
John and Ann set up the Mellor Archaeological Trust to promote the investigation, interpretation and preservation
of the archaeology of the area around Mellor Church and surrounding parts of Mellor, Stockport and Greater Manchester.
The Trust managed the Mellor Heritage Project which ran from 2006 to 2009 and extended the work to cover not only the archaeology but also the history of the whole of the Parish of Mellor, including Ludworth and Marple Bridge.
The Friends of the Mellor Archaeological Trust
The basic income of the Trust is from the activities of the Friends raising money through subscriptions, donations, open days and private visits, sale of booklets, gift aid receipts and bank interest.
In recent years grant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council have enabled us to greatly expand the scope of the work and enlist the necessary services of professionals in different fields. However, to sustain this the Trust must raise £5,000 a year as our part of this partnership agreement with the Heritage Lottery Fund, which ended in 2009.
In addition, in order to ensure continuation of the work into the future, we need to build up reserves to finance the excavation in 2010and beyond, when the HLF grant funding has ended.
How much does it cost to become a Friend?
We try to keep costs down to a minimum and have asked only £5.00 per year for membership of the Friends since 1999. For this very modest amount, renewable each September, Friends receive regular updates and information and are invited to exclusive Friends events such as the preview evening held before the Open Weekends. We are always very happy however to receive additional donations, however small, which are very much appreciated.
