Crop marks in 1995, geophysics in 1998, and 12 years of excavations uncovered the Iron Age settlement in John and Ann Hearle’s garden at the Old Vicarage, Mellor. Unexcavated bits are in the churchyard! The finds cover 10,000 years from the Mesolthic to the Medieval and later. In 2000, the Mellor Archaeological Trust was formed and Pam Bates created the website, which was a runner-up in the 2006 British Archaeology Awards.
Now, the Mellor Archaeological Trust is diversifying markedly and, whilst staying within the bounds of Mellor, is focussing attention more upon the Goyt River valley and its exciting heritage in the Textile Industry. More work remains to be done at Shaw Cairn and this will be carried on in parallel.
